309S Heat Resistant Stainless Steel

Introduction

Overview of 309S Heat Resistant Stainless Steel

The 309S stainless steel is an austenitic alloy designed specifically for high-temperature applications requiring strong corrosion resistance. This material withstands oxidation at temperatures up to 1900°F (1038°C) under stable, non-cyclic conditions. However, repeated thermal cycling lowers its oxidation resistance threshold to around 1850°F (1010°C).

In order to maintain the inherent corrosion resistance of stainless steel, the steel must contain more than 18% chromium and more than 8% nickel. 304 stainless steel is a grade of stainless steel produced according to the American ASTM standard.

Futures of 309S Heat Resistant Stainless Steel

Hot Forming
Heat evenly within a range of 1742–2192°F (950–1200°C). Following hot forming, a final annealing at 1832–2101°F (1000–1150°C) with rapid quenching is advised to optimize material properties.

Cold Forming
This alloy is highly ductile and can be shaped similarly to 316L. However, cold forming is not recommended for pieces with prolonged high-temperature exposure, as this can lead to carbide precipitation and sigma phase formation.

Welding
309S alloy is easily weldable using most common methods, including TIG, PLASMA, MIG, SMAW, SAW, and FCAW.
