the difference between 2205 and 2507 stainless steel strip

What’s The Difference Between 2205 And 2507 Stainless Steel Strip?

The standard of duplex stainless steel 2205 is ASTM A240.

Duplex stainless steel 2205 alloy is a duplex stainless steel composed of 22% chromium, 2.5% molybdenum and 4.5% nickel-nitrogen alloy.

It has high strength, good impact toughness and good overall and local stress corrosion resistance.

2507 (UNS S32750) super duplex stainless steel is composed of 25% chromium, 4% molybdenum and 7% nickel.

It has strong strength and corrosion resistance, and is mainly used in chemical processing, petrochemical and sea equipment.

It has strong resistance to chloride corrosion, high thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion coefficient.

The high content of chromium, molybdenum and nitrogen makes it highly resistant to pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and uniform corrosion.

The 2205 and 2507 stainless steel strip has become an important engineering material during past decades. Do you know what is the difference between two stainless steel strips?

Let’s keep reading.

2205 and 2507 stainless steel strips are stainless steels containing molybdenum.

The molybdenum content in 2507 stainless steel strip is slightly higher than 2205 stainless steel strip.

Due to the molybdenum and high chromium contents in the stainless steel, the overall performance of 2205 and 2507 stainless steel strip is better than 317L stainless steel strip.

The duplex structure of 2507 gives it strong resistance to stress corrosion cracking.

Due to its higher alloy content, the corrosion resistance and strength of 2507 stainless steel strips are better than 2205 stainless steel strips.

2507 stainless steel is especially suitable for offshore oil and gas mining equipment.

Benefits of 2205 and 2507 Stainless Steel Strip

Good Corrosion Resistance

The higher chromium and molybdenum content of 2205 and 2507 make them have strong resistance to overall corrosion against organic acids such as formic acid and acetic acid.

Grade 2205 and 2507 stainless steel also have strong corrosion resistance to inorganic acids, especially those containing chlorides.

Compared with 904L, 2507 has stronger corrosion resistance to diluted sulfuric acid mixed with chloride ions.

904L stainless steel strip is an austenitic alloy strip specially designed to resist corrosion by pure sulfuric acid.

316L stainless steel strip can not be used in hydrochloric acid environment, it may suffer local corrosion or overall corrosion.

2507 is used in diluted hydrochloric acid environment and has strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.

The lower carbon content of 2507 greatly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation in the intergranular during heat treatment. Therefore, this alloy has a strong ability to resist intergranular corrosion associated with carbides.

Excellent Formability and Weldability

The weldability of duplex 2205 and 2507 stainless steel strip is very good.

The required performance of 2205 alloy is that the weld metal and thermally deteriorated parts still maintain the same corrosion resistance, strength and toughness as the base metal.

The welding of 2205 is not difficult, but the welding procedure needs to be designed so that after welding, it can maintain a good phase balance and avoid the precipitation of harmful metal or non-metal phases.

The presence of austenite in the structure of duplex stainless steel can reduce the brittleness and grain growth tendency of high chromium ferrite, and improve weldability and toughness.
