17-4 PH (UNS S17400) Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel

Introduction

Overview of 17-4 PH (UNS S17400) Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel

17-4 PH stainless steel is a grade of martensitic, precipitation-hardening stainless steel with the additions of chromium, nickel, and copper.

17-4 PH stainless steel, also called 630 precipitation hardening stainless steel.

After heat treatment, the mechanical properties of the strip product are more perfect, and can reach a compressive strength of up to 1100-1300 Mpa (160-190 ksi).

Grade 17-4 PH stainless steel cannot be used at temperatures higher than 300°C (572°F) or very low temperatures.

It has good corrosion resistance to the atmosphere and diluted acids or salts.

Its corrosion resistance is the same as 304 stainless steel and 430 stainless steel.

17-4 PH stainless steel can be used for a variety of industries including pump shafts, oil path, mechanical seals, and within the aerospace industry. Its composition is carbon, chromium, columbian + tantalum, copper, manganese, nickel, phosphorous, silicon, and sulfur.

Futures of 17-4 PH (UNS S17400) Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel

This alloy has improved corrosion resistance with a maximum operating temperature of 500°F (260°C). It is used for applications that require high strength and toughness, such as aircraft landing gear, truck suspension components and automotive exhaust systems.

This alloy has excellent resistance to chloride-ion stress corrosion cracking in marine atmospheres containing chlorides at elevated temperatures up to 400°F (204°C). 17-4 PH stainless steel can be used for parts exposed to moderate levels of stress and does not form brittle intergranular corrosion products.

17-4 PH stainless steel has excellent strength and toughness at elevated temperatures up to 500°F (260°C) and good strength at cryogenic temperatures. It has good impact strength up to 350 ksi tensile strength.

17-4ph vs. 17-7ph precipitation hardening stainless steel strip

17-4 PH vs. 17-7 PH Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel Strip

Stainless steel strips 17-4 PH and 17-7 PH are two types of precipitation hardening stainless steel that belong to the Martensitic grades steel. Both 17-4 PH and 17-7 PH have the basic elements carbon, chromium, and nickel. The main difference between the two types of precipitation hardening stainless steel is that the nickel is replaced by molybdenum in 17-7 PH. This leads to a better resistance against creep, corrosion, stress relief at elevated temperatures and also makes it softer than 17-4 PH.

The Difference Between 17-4PH and 316L Stainless Steel Strip

Stainless steel strips are popular choices for manufacturing welded tubes and pipes. However, there exists a subsets of stainless steel products which were made with two different grades of stainless steel, namely 17-4PH and 316L. These two grades are similar as they are both used in manufacturing stainless steel welded pipes and tubes. But there are differences between these two types of products, especially from their chemical composition point of view.
