What Is Incoloy 800 Strip?

Incoloy 800 strip is a nickel based alloy strip that has high resistance to oxidation and heat.

Incoloy 800 strip is a nickel-iron-chromium alloy containing 21% chromium, 32% nickel and various amounts of manganese, aluminum and titanium. In addition to its excellent corrosion resistance at high temperatures, the alloy has good resistance to stress corrosion cracking because of its high nickel content.

Incoloy 800 strip has excellent high temperature strength combined with excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion at temperatures up to about 1,100°C (2,000°F). It also has good mechanical properties at low temperatures down to about -200°C (-328°F).

This alloy strip can be used in a variety of applications, including heat exchangers and fuel cell construction.

The typical applications for Incoloy 800 strip include high temperature tubes and parts for high pressure steam or gas pipelines, heat exchangers in nuclear power plants or chemical processing plants, superconducting magnets for MRI machines or particle accelerators, exhaust ducts for commercial airplanes and rocket engines among others.

In What Applications Is Incoloy 800 Strip Used?

Incoloy 800 strip is a material that is commonly used in the construction of chemical plants, oil and gas refineries, power generation facilities and other industrial facilities.

It is one of the most popular alloys because of its ability to withstand heat and corrosion. This alloy can be used in applications where there are high temperatures or corrosive environments.

Incoloy 800 strip is also known as nickel-iron-chromium alloy. It has good impact strength at both low and high temperatures. It also has excellent corrosion resistance to corrosive environments in both oxidizing and reducing conditions.

This material is often used to construct components such as heat exchangers, industrial furnaces, and other equipment that needs to withstand high temperatures, high pressure and harsh environments.

Incoloy 800 strip is also used in the following applications:

  • Heat exchangers
  • Carburizing equipment
  • Nitric acid condensers
  • Nuclear steam-generator tubing
  • Combustion chambers and tubing for gasoline turbines

How To Produce One Roll Incoloy 800 Strip?

Casting: Incoloy 800 alloy melts can absorb a large amount of gas and undergo strong oxidation. Generally, induction furnace is used for smelting, the surface of the melt is covered with glass, and charcoal, manganese, silicon, magnesium, titanium, etc. are used for deoxidation. The melting temperature is between 1450 and 1560 °C, which varies with the alloy. Usually flat ingots are cast in pig iron molds (see cast iron mold ingots) or semi-continuous casting (see semi-continuous ingot casting). Ingot weight in the range of 30kg to 400kg. Defects such as inclusions and cold partitions on the surface of the ingot should be cleaned up.

Hot rolling: Incoloy 800 alloys have good high-temperature plasticity and high deformation resistance. If a gas stove is used, the sulfur content of the gas must be strictly controlled to avoid hot brittleness. A nickel ingot weighing 400kg and having a thickness of 200mm was hot rolled to a thickness of 10mm through 11 passes. Sometimes it is forged before hot rolling to improve the internal structure.

Pickling: Incoloy 800 alloys are easy to stick to the tool when milling surfaces (see milling of non-ferrous alloy ingots), so pickling is commonly used for hot-rolled slabs to remove surface oxides. Pickling uses a mixed acid of sulfuric acid and nitric acid, or nitric acid alone. In order to improve the effect of pickling, cold rolling is performed with a small reduction before pickling, so that the oxide layer whose extension is smaller than the matrix is broken, so as to facilitate the reaction with acid.

Cold rolling: Hot rolled Incoloy 800 alloy billets with a thickness of 5.0 to 13.5 mm need to undergo repeated cold rolling and annealing to reach the finished product thickness. The reduction ratio between two anneals can reach 70% to 85%. Four-high rolling mills are commonly used in cold rolling. High-strength nickel alloy strips are finish rolled in 12-high or 20-high mills. During cold rolling, it should be fully lubricated and cooled to prevent sticking to the roll and affecting the surface quality.

Annealing: Annealing is divided into intermediate annealing and finish annealing. The purpose of intermediate annealing is to eliminate work hardening caused by cold rolling; finish annealing is to control finished product properties. The temperature for complete annealing of Incoloy 800 alloy is between 570 and 850 IC, depending on alloy composition and product thickness. The coiled strip is easy to bond when annealed, so it should be re-rolled before annealing. Because the oxide scale of nickel alloys is difficult to remove, bell-type vacuum furnaces are often used for annealing. Nickel-aluminum, nickel-titanium and other complex nickel alloys can be precipitation hardened by solution/aging treatment to increase strength.

Tempering: The purpose of tempering is to restore hardness in order to improve impact strength, tensile strength (tensile strength) and fatigue resistance (fatigue strength) of alloy strips after annealing treatment.

Strip straightening: Straightening ensures that the product has high dimensional accuracy and flatness with no deformation such as bends or kinks in it. This step can be done either manually or mechanically using a straightener machine or press brake arrangement with automatic measurement system to ensure dimensional accuracy of the strip being processed.

Slitting Process: For different thickness of Incoloy 800 strip slitting process, the small and large slitting machines will be used by our team. Our larger slitting machines can cut hot rolled mother coils from mill origin directly. Thickness is from 2mm to 6mm.

And meantime we use the small machines to cut the narrow strip coils as precision strips. Thickness is from 0.02mm to 3.0mm.

Our workers will make adjustments between coils and cutting tools when they are preparing to slit in order to minimize the burr of strips edge as much as possible.

Packaging Process: To a certain extent, exquisite standard sea packaging reflects one supplier‘s service. It greatly influences the client’s next purchasing plans.

One kind of packaging is called wooden pallet. And the fumigation wooden pallets and non-fumigation pallets are two kinds of pallets type.

Eye to eye or eye to wall types of packaging alloy strips will be adopted before shipment.

The surface finish of metal strips will be packaged with waterproof paper. Then coating the PVC film on this paper.

After that, the banding strap will be used for fastening pallets and strips products.

Before placing the metal strips into the wooden case, the strips are packaged with perfect packaging.

Wooden case and four corners shall not be smaller than the outer diameter of the total strips.

In addition, clear labels are tagged on the outside of these sea standard packages for easy identification of these nickel alloy strips specifications and quality information.

How To Choose The Right Incoloy 800 Strip Supplier From China?

If you want to buy Incoloy 800 strip for industrial usage, you should know, there are many suppliers and manufacturers produce Incoloy 800 strip and supply to many industries like heat exchanger or chemical industry.

But in fact, not all the suppliers have the ability to produce good quality products, some of them just choose cheaper materials but with high price which is not a good choice for users.

Here is a quick guide on how to choose a good alloy 800 strip supplier.

  1. First, you should ask the manufacturer whether they can do the inspection themselves before delivery. Most of the large manufacturers have their own inspection team, they will strictly inspect all the goods before delivery.
  2. Second, you should ask if they use 100% pure raw material to produce your goods, because there are some suppliers use recycled raw material or mixed raw material which may cause problem during using.
  3. Third, it is better to visit their factory by yourself and check the production line and warehouse by yourself. It will be great if you can check their production process and production equipment. Because it is very important for you to know how they control the quality from process till delivery.

Conclusion

Incoloy 800 strip has a high thermal conductivity, which is twice as high as that of stainless steel strips. It is good conductor of heat and is often used in places with larger temperature variance.
