What is 301 Stainless Steel Strip?

301 stainless steel strip is a type of austenitic stainless steel strip that contains chromium and nickel.

It is commonly used in a variety of applications, including automotive and aerospace components, springs, washers, and more.

This type of stainless steel strip is known for its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and good ductility.

The “301” in 301 stainless steel strip refers to the ASTM designation for this particular alloy. The “301” designation indicates that this stainless steel strip meets certain standards for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and other factors.

In general, 301 stainless steel strip is made up of 16% to 18% chromium and 6% to 8% nickel, with small amounts of other elements such as carbon, manganese, and silicon.

One of the key characteristics of 301 stainless steel strip is its high tensile strength. Tensile strength refers to the amount of force that a material can withstand before it begins to deform or break. 301 stainless steel strip has a tensile strength of up to 180,000 psi, which makes it ideal for applications where high strength is required.

In addition to its high strength, 301 stainless steel strip is also known for its good ductility. Ductility refers to the ability of a material to be stretched or deformed without breaking. Why 301 Stainless Steel Strip For Springs

301 stainless steel strip for springs

The 301 stainless steel strip has high strength after cold working, which is the first choice for constant force springs manufacturing.

The constant force spring, also known as torsion spring, which is made of 301 stainless steel strip.

The stress can determine the spring diameter, strength and working life.

The action of a constant force spring is similar to the move of stretching a ribbon.

When the spring stretches and rewinds, the working part is tangent to the circle of the spring itself.

As long as the diameter of the spring is constant, the force of the spring is constant.

In an extremely long spring design work, the diameter has an advantage, and the tension increases slightly as the spring stretches.

However, this increased part is relatively small relative to the stretched length and can be ignored in many real life applications.

According to the application principle of them, constant force springs can be divided into linear motion constant type and rotary motion constant torque type.

When linear stretched, the unit of force will be kilogram, N, pound.

Constant force springs can be used for vehicles, automotive industry, counterweights, power sources, power cords, cordless curtains, generator radios and some toys.

Austenitic stainless steel strip for springs mainly includes SUS301-CSP and SUS304-CSP.

Compared with 304 stainless steel strip, SUS301 spring steel strip has a slightly lower corrosion resistance, but it is more suitable for spring production with a lower cost.

After the special production process of continuous bright annealing and rolling, which can help achieve good hardness and be suitable for bending processing.

Especially in terms of mechanical properties, 301 spring strip is very good, which is unmatched by manganese steel.

What Are The Advantages Of Spring Tempered 301 Stainless Steel Strip

spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip

The spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip offers certain benefits over other materials. The strips are available in various sizes, thickness and tempers.

They have a wide array of uses in different industries. The strips have several advantages over other materials. Some of them are as follows:

  1. The spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip is well suited for applications that need very high tensile strength and good wear resistance. This makes it ideal for applications like springs and fasteners where the load is considerable.
  2. The spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip has a certain degree of toughness even at sub-zero temperatures. This makes it suitable for applications that need to operate in extreme conditions.
  3. The spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip has excellent corrosion resistance properties. It can withstand corrosion from most chemicals, acids, alkalis and corrosion from atmospheric conditions.
  4. The spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip is relatively easy to work with during fabrication as compared to many other metals. It can be fabricated using common tools and equipment.
  5. The spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip is a versatile metal that can be used in many applications where other metals are not suitable due to some limitation.

What is Spring Tempered 301 Stainless Steel Strip

Spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip is commonly used for springs manufacturing.

To make tempered stainless steel spring 301 strip, the cold rolled stainless steel is heated to a point just below its upper critical temperature, between 1700° F and 1850° F.

Then the material is rapidly quenched by immersion into liquid salt. The purpose of this rapid quenching is to trap carbon in solution, which causes the material to become austenitic.

After quenching, the material is then subjected to a second tempering treatment, where it is heated again to a temperature of about 1200° F. This second tempering relieves stresses developed during quenching, and also reduces the hardness of the material and makes it less brittle.

Spring tempered 301 stainless steel strip is made from grade 301 (S30100) stainless steel coil, which has a minimum of 16% chromium and 6% nickel.

It has been modified to increase both its strength and ductility. Other characteristics of this stainless steel grade are high strength, excellent corrosion resistance and the retention of a larger fraction of room temperature tensile strength than the common austenitic alloys like garde 304 stainless steel strip.

Spring tempered stainless steel strip is known for its ability to withstand high tensile stress and in turn helps minimize any permanent deformation.
